Marc Jacobs is an American designer with two major labels, his and Louis Vuitton. He was born in New York City on April 9, 1963. He graduated from High School of Art and Design in 1981 and studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York. At age of 15, Jacobs worked at Charivari clothing store in New York City, where he got to meet legendary designer Perry Ellis.
In 1984, Robert Duffy, then an executive at the Ruben Thomas sportswear company, hired Jacobs to design a collection called Sketchbook. That was when Marc Jacobs designed and sold his debut collection of hand-knit sweaters. Not long after, they formed Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc. and have continued to work as partners to this day.
He designed his first collection bearing the Marc Jacobs label in 1986. Soon after, in 1987, Jacobs became the youngest designer ever to receive CFDA's Perry Ellis award for New Fashion Talent. In the same year he was awarded the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award and the Design Student of the Year Award.
In 1989, Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy joined unit of Perry, after its founder died, as President and Jacobs as Vice President of Women's Design.
Since 1997, Jacobs is Louis Vuitton's creative director. He created company's first ready-to-wear line. In 2007 Filmmaker Loïc Prigent made a documentary film about Marc Jacobs entitled Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton. Film was relesed in 2007.
In the spring of 2001, Jacobs introduced his diffusion line, Marc by Marc Jacobs. He remains head designer for his Marc Jacobs line, as well as for his Marc by Marc Jacobs line.
